2020 has been a really formative year for me as a writer, and honestly… that’s been really, really great.
I didn’t start off 2020 expecting to be a writer. I didn’t have any ambitions or plans to write beyond this blog, and maybe my more informal Tumblr. Yet here I am, 130+ articles under my belt, three days before the new year dawns. In many ways, I’m still quite shocked: like I said, I didn’t expect to become a writer. But I’m trying to claim -or rather, reclaim- my own successes at the end of htis year.
I’ve done a bit of everything, in terms of writing. In general, I’ve gona loads of video game news writing, quite a bit of feminist focused writing, loads of anime coverage and just general reviewing. It’s been an incredibly dynamic year, unexpectedly so, and hopefuly, I’ll be just as fruitful in 2021.
Still, I’d like to set some solid goals for the next year, if only to have a plan…of sorts. While I already know I’ll be writing a lot -I’m now doing regular seasonal anime coverage, which means a minimum of 24 articles per anime season- I’d also like to mark some distinct plans that aren’t just “cover anime”.
So, for 2021, I’m setting three specific goals, in terms of my writing. Here goes: In 2021, I want to…
1. Start my fairly fortnightly blog project, Comfort Food, via Substack
2. Post more reviews and independent content to my Medium account
3. Write more feature articles for But Why Tho? and Anime Feminist.
The first one will kick off on 12/31, actually: I’ve got a nice little announcement planned that will detail my plans for Comfort Food and everything that’ll happen over the course of 2021. I’m definitely excited to start working with the series that’ll be the focal point of the newsletter.
My second and third goals will be more of year-long goals: they’ll happen as the months go by. I can say that I’ll definitely have content for both in either January or February. I’m eager to get stuff up as soon as I can, though it’s also a matter of being patient.
The second, in particular, will definitely be a January goal, especially since I have much more license over scheduling and what content goes up on my Medium. It’s far easier to clear something because I’m writer, editor, and publisher: what I want to go up on there goes. Really, the hardest part is chosing what I want to write about: there’s so, so many things I wanna talk about!
I’m also 100% sure these will all become both more robust and also, split off into different ideas. I think that’s just a product of the way I create and tend to think. Writing is my passion: it’s only natural that everything buds and sprouts into new ideas.
That all being said, these are my goals for the new year. I think they’re a pretty solid foundation for me to work with. Now, it’s just a matter of setting them in motion and hopefully, following through with them!
